WHAT IS THE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD PROGRAM? It is an after school science program to enhance the opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. MCES SO Program is sponsored by our PTA.
WHY SHOULD I SIGN MY CHILD UP? Elementary students are natural scientists. It is a great way to engage your student in fun, educational activities to learn materials they will cover in future classes. Students will also meet new friends and gain pride representing MCES.
WHAT IS THE NCSO TOURNAMENT? It looks a lot more like a track meet than a science fair. Twenty events are run in three different time periods. The regional tournament is scheduled for March 28, 2020 at Middle Creek High School.
WHO COMPETES? MCES will be entering 3 teams of 18 students (Varsity/JV1/JV2) to compete against other Wake County schools at the NCSO tournament.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? Any 3-5 grade student at MCES.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Parents and teachers at MCES volunteer to coach teams. Students sign-up and are assigned to two or three events. Each event team consists of 6-8 MCES students that will meet outside of school to learn/build for their event. These teams then compete against other elementary schools in Wake County at the Science Olympiad Tournament.
HOW ARE EVENT TEAMS DETERMINED? When you register your child, we ask for the student to select their top 3 event choices per period. Assigning teams is a difficult task and many factors exist to make sure that we have all events covered. We try our best to place students on teams where their interest lies.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO PARTICIPATE? Students will be placed on 2 or 3 event teams. The coaches set up practice sessions either after school at MCES or on weekends at the coach's home and typically meet for an hour. In all, event teams start meeting in late January and conclude with the tournament. Students must attend the MCES practice tournament on March 7, 2020 and NCSO tournament on March 28, 2020.
ARE EVENT PRACTICE MEETINGS ALREADY DETERMINED? We are trying to increase participation in every event. We have asked our coaches to schedule the day they would prefer to hold their event practice meetings. Not only does this make this convenient for our volunteers, we are hoping this will work best for our students with other extracurricular activities. Most events are already scheduled Monday - Friday right after school. An "A" means it will be held on a week day to be determined. A "WE" will be scheduled sometime on the weekend to be determined. Please view the updated "Events Scheduled" link on our website for schedule updates. Click here for the most updated practice info.
