Hi Everyone!
We are hoping to complete the groundwork in the Middle Creek School Garden (we will refer to it as that until we have a contest to come up with a name soon) by the end of June. We would like to get together at the garden on Tuesday June 24th from 6:30 pm until 8 pm to complete the tasks of:
The rain date will be Thursday June 26 from 6:30 until 8pm. If you are able to, please bring a shovel, rake and wheelbarrow. Newspapers are also needed, preferably not the shiny paper. If anyone can help put together the remaining beds, we have the wood and nails. Some tomato cages and stakes are needed, as well as twine. Some of the other plants on our more immediate wish list include: corn, cucumber, cotton, basil, dill, and pumpkins. If you happen to be at a store and see any for a reasonable price, we would love for you to pick them up. We will be emailing out a sign up genius soon for a watering schedule so the crops can continue to thrive in this heat. We hope you are able to help out for a few hours! The area should be shaded then- you may want to wear some bug spray and bring some icy H20. Thank You!!! Good morning!
I want to say a big thanks to Kim Lopes, Katie LaBranche, Mrs. Parrish, Amy and Dwayne Eury, Carrie and Gary Ward, and all our kiddos who worked in the garden this past Saturday. We now have tomatoes, peppers (thanks to Gary Ward), and, thanks to Laura Fountain, we have okra, watermelon, sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, and finger eggplant! Thank you to Mr. Mims for watering every morning! We need some volunteers to mulch the flower beds, lay down weed cloth, lay the stones in the path, and weed the garden. Mrs. Fountain and I are going to plant some vegetables tomorrow right at 3 if anyone is interested in helping. I plan on having a meeting soon with the garden committee where we will begin to organize a schedule of duties for the classes here to participate in. My class is going to paint a birdhouse to place in the garden. We welcome any classroom projects! Any parents, grandparents, friends, and teachers want to join our MCE garden club, please let me know. The YMCA is in the process of beginning their garden club, which is exciting. We are so excited about how our MCE garden has progressed! Come check it out! We are having our 3rd Garden Morning, this Saturday, June 7, at 9:00. Please come volunteer if you can! Bring tools, gloves, and be ready to get to work and have fun!
Take a look at the latest photos: MCES GARDEN HAS BEGUN TO GROW!!! Hello Friends! MCES Garden is making progress! It would be great if you could go visit the garden so your students can see the progress that has been made, this will allow the children to feel involved and get excited about what is to come in phase 2! I have such a great group of volunteers who have been helping make our garden possible, and I am grateful for that! Here is what we have been discussing lately: We are in the process of brainstorming ideas to get the students involved in the process. Maybe we could collect pennies in the classrooms on Fridays and call it pennies for Peonies? Then they could plant the flowers to create a flower border around the vegetable garden which will which attract beneficial insects. The Suzy Blue blueberry bush has begun to produce blueberries! So that is exciting!! Also, I would like the children to participate in some garden art activities on wood, not just wood art, but fun art from various recycled material...teachers and parents can find some fun ideas on Pinterest for these! This is optional of course, but let me know if your class would be interested! I am also working with Ms. Petterson on aligning her science lessons with the garden. A reminder that this new garden provides new lesson plan ideas, and hands on learning options, for teachers to support the new Core Curriculum in Science! Our MCES garden is a work in progress. teacher/staff/parents....we are so excited to get your ideas, too, for our school garden! Thanks for your support!! Purpose for MCES GARDEN · To promote learning through real-world applications of science, reading, writing, math, health, social studies, art and guidance objectives from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (Learn by doing!) · To encourage children to lead a healthy lifestyle through healthy eating and physical activity as promoted in “Eat Smart, Move More: North Carolina’s Plan to Prevent Overweight, Obesity, and Related Chronic Diseases” (Eat smart, move more!) · To increase the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed daily by our students both inside and outside school · To increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of agriculture and its importance to our society (Food does not come from a store!) · To encourage home gardening through demonstrating a variety of garden types: in-ground plots, container gardens, hanging gardens, etc. (Everyone can have a garden!) · To teach food safety from seed to table.
